APPRENTICESHIPS

Northeast Wisconsin Library Apprenticeship Initiative

…is a building block in our mission to cultivate a diverse library workforce. The initiative exposes young adults who reflect the racial diversity of our communities to a career in libraries. Selected young adults become apprentices mentored by library professionals to develop services that honor the values and needs of the broader public. The paid apprenticeships last 12 weeks for a total of 120 work hours.

Meet our 2023 Apprentices:

  • Moua Yang

    Moua Yang is recent graduate from the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay with a degree in English and minor in Secondary Education. He grew up reading manga and fantasy fiction stories. Captivated by characters and plots, he developed a love of writing. Moua also enjoys being active; claiming that running, chasing the clouds, and feeling the wind against his face brings him joy. Moua completed his apprenticeship with the Elisha D. Smith Public Library, where he designed a workshop for teens that aligned with his interests and the library’s makerspace and hands-on learning philosophy.

  • Amari Brown

    Amari Brown is a second-year student at the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh, originally from Atlanta, Georgia. She is studying Business Management and aspires to obtain the necessary credentials to practice Corporate Law. Amari also has future goals of developing her own nonprofits that give back to communities. She hopes to make an impact on the world for the better. Amari completed her apprenticeship with the Appleton Public Library, where she applied her educational background and knowledge to support the library’s Small Business - Big Impact initiative centering local entrepreneurs of color.

  • Camille Katahtu’ntha Billie

    Camille Katahtu’ntha Billie is an artist from Oneida, Wisconsin and recent graduate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a degree in fine arts, emphasis in Designed Objects. She is currently a Visitor Services Specialist at the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian in Chicago and an artist in residence at the Newberry Library for their 2024 Exhibition Indigenous Chicago. Camille completed her apprenticeship with the Kaukauna Public Library, where she applied her knowledge and interests in critical ecology, linoleum block printing, beading, and illustration to support historically excluded communities.
